I had not seen or even herd of an elliptical bike up until a couple of years ago. Once I understood the concept and actually saw one I immediately realized the potential uses and benefits. I believe this peace of equipment gets a bad rap and is underrated.
I see great befits and advantages for seniors, those who are beginners with low levels of fitness and those with some disabilities. It is genreally a little harder to convince he older gneration that Ellipticals are a good option.
As an instructor showing a new client around a fitness facility for the first time, it would be no problem to convince them to warm up on a recumbent or even an upright cycle. But ellipticals ‘that looks like it would be hard to use” this type of comment was common. If you have ever used an elliptical you will know that the contrary is true. Ellipticals are quite simple to master with very little learning curve at all.
So assuming one has put to rest these apprehensions at least enough to give one a try, lets look at the hybrid elliptical bike.
It gives you all the advantages of an elliptical, a weight bearing form of cardio vascular exercise. Zero impact but higher intensity than none weight bearing cardio, such as rower or cycling.
It is duel action, so you use your arms helping to improve muscl tone in the upper body.
Ordinary ellipticals can be to tough for some people initially, Often people cannot last more than a few seconds on an elliptical without becoming breathless. However on the elliptical bike one can go from weight bearing to seated exercise at will. Just sit down and immediately you are performing a much less intense cycling type exercise.
If you find the elliptical mode to hard, start your work outs moistly biking and gradually increase the percentage of time you’re standing.
During a 20 -30 minute workout I suggest standing for 30 seconds to one minute every 4 to 5 minutes, gradually increase the amount of time your standing untill the ratio suites you.
The elliptical bike is also an option for those with disabilities if you have lower limb weakness, some people difficulty even turning the pedals of an exercise bike especially of one has an injury or is recouveing from knee surgury. One can use the arm action while sitting to assist your leg movment, maintaining and improving the range of motion and flexibility in your lower limbs.
